12.30.13

I read this and wanted to pass it on to you to read. May it be your prayer too.

O CHRIST,
All thy ways of mercy tend to and end in my delight.
Thou dids't weep, sorrow, suffer that I might rejoice.
For my joy thou hast sent the Comforter,
     multiplied thy promises,
     shown me my future happiness,
     given me a living fountain.
Though art preparing joy for me and me for joy;
I pray for joy, wait for joy, long for joy;
give me more than I can hold, desire, or think of.
Measure out to me my times and degrees of joy,
     at my work, business, duties.
If I weep at night, give me joy in the morning.
Let me rest in the thought of thy love,
     pardon for sin,
     my title to heaven,
     my future unspotted state.
I am an unworthy recipient of thy grace.
I often disesteem thy blood and slight thy love,
but can in repentance draw water
from the wells of thy joyous forgiveness.
Let my heart leap towards the eternal sabbath,
where the work of redemption, sanctification, preservation, glorification
is finished and perfected for ever,
where thou wilt rejoice over me with joy.
There is no joy like the joy of heaven,
for in that state are no sad divisions, unchristian quarrels,
          contentions, evil designs,
          weariness, hunger, cold,
          sadness, sin, suffering,
          persecutions, toils of duty.
O healthful place where none are sick!
O happy land where all are kings!
O holy assembly where all are priests!
How free a state where none are servants except to thee!
Bring me speedily to the land of joy.

A Curve in the Path

Over and over again, it seems I come right back to being reminded that God's pathway is perfect... even when there comes a curve in what I thought was a straight path. I realized I had hit a "curve" this week, but I am going to back up and start with November.

November. My month can basically be summed up in one word: work. Let me explain. My coworker was out for three full weeks, so I was given the responsibility to cover all of her workload, my responsibilities being distributed to others in the office. Add being newly-trained with being slammed with a good number of referrals, and I suddenly was in over my head, with work coming out my ears. Each day I went in for a 9 - 10 hour work day wondering how I was going to get everything done that needed attention that day. During this crazy time though, God sent reminder #1 of His perfect plan for my life: people. It shouldn't surprise me, but it is amazing how God just sort of has people placed at the exact spot in your life where you need them. And when I think of people at work, I'm super thankful for how God put me in a workplace with some really wonderful people. I sit here thinking specifically of multiple talks with one who was such a blessing and encouragement to me when the stress was eating me alive. But in reality there are several people at work I am thankful for.

With my coworker's return and the coming holidays/time off, I was thinking life was finally going to be calm again. But then came the "curve" I didn't know how I was going to make it through. Actually, that is quite literal. Suddenly losing driving power in my car when going into a curve on my way home, I realized I wasn't going to make it home (although I did end up making it after a couple stops and starts of the engine). I had been hearing a whining sound when driving my car earlier in the day, and had briefly mentioned to my mom I thought it'd be good for someone to drive with me so they could also listen to it and see if it was a problem. And then I found out it was. That was about a week ago, and I'm still without a car, although I'm hoping the shop it was towed to today will be able to diagnose and treat its problems. But I was reminded this week, that this little curve in the path is still part of God's path... even if it ends up being an expensive curve. My grandpa reminded me of a pretty precious truth: my Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills. And a Father who has all that can definitely provide for whatever amount my car bill comes to. Not only that, but this Father makes it pretty clear His feelings towards me:  "And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." (2 Cor. 6:18) This curve God put into my path suddenly seems a lot less challenging. I have a God who cares and promises to provide for all my needs, and with that, what more do I need?

Thought for the Day

Thought I'd share an interesting thought from Tozer...

"We are often hindered from giving up our treasures to the Lord out of fear for their safety; this is especially true when those treasures are loved relatives and friends. But we need have no such fears. Our Lord came not to destroy but to save. Everything is safe which we commit to Him, and nothing is really safe which is not so committed.

Father, I want to know Thee, but my coward heart fears to give up its toys. I cannot part with them without inward bleeding, and I do not try to hide from Thee the terror of the parting. I come trembling, but I do come. Please root from my heart all those things which I have cherished so long and which have become a very part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival. Then shalt Thou make the place of Thy feet glorious. Then shall my heart have no need of the sun to shine in it, for Thyself wilt be the light of it, and there shall be no night there. In Jesus’ name, Amen. "

July Update

I realized it's been a while since I last posted anything on here. I've been busy now that I have joined the working world - my first full time job ever!! I got a call out of the blue at the beginning of the month from the place where I had my first interview back in May. They had hired someone for that job, but they had another position open now, and they said they were interested in me for the job!

Talk about exciting news and an exciting provision of a job. After 15+ job applications and 3 interviews, I really wasn't sure when or where a job might come from... all I knew was that God would provide because He's a God that cares and is faithful. And then the call came. I had to laugh at this one, because just the week before someone from church had said that God would provide a job from where I least expected it. He was dead on right. The job I was hired for was one I hadn't even applied for.

And now I'm working on week 3 of employment! My position is that of FGDM Coordinator - I'm working to help struggling families out and see them get the support they need. I'm still in the training stage, but I'm really excited about this opportunity to help people in my hometown / county.

Another Adventure Monday

Our journey this Monday began across town, approaching the woods from the opposite side. During our adventure down paths less traveled by, we found Meditation Point - which is basically a clearing in the woods with a flat circular rock slab in the center. We each took turns posing on this thoughtful bit of stone. I wasn't into meditating on the rock, so I instead chose to give a speech to my friends which turned into a recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution. Amazing how my friend and I could have memorized that way back in elementary school and STILL remember it.

We chose to also go off the beaten path and ended up discovering some new trails. I have to say, it's much more adventurous to choose the Road less traveled by...

On another note, may I share a lovely verse that has blessed me recently? Psalm 9:10 "And they that know your name will put their trust in You: for you, LORD, have not forsaken them that seek ysou." If you are seeking after God, rest assured that He won't forget you, no matter if the skies are dark and foreboding, or if they a sunny and cloud-less. He may just be waiting for you to recognize a little more how much you need Him. If you are not seeking after God, why don't you start today? He's not an ogre or a demanding tyrant. I promise. And if my promise means little to you, go search God out for yourself and find out what He's like. Because He's promised to love you, and if He is a promise-keeping God, then it would be the greatest loss in the world for you to not know Him and be able to experience how He keeps His promises to you.

Where is God?

Where is God in the hard times? Where is God when someone sets off bombs that kill/hurt people? Where is God when you are all by yourself someplace? Or when life is going well? Do you ever wonder about this? Have you ever asked God where He was, or what He was doing?

If so, may I suggest a short sermon I just heard today in chapel. It was encouraging and powerful, enough that I want to pass it on. Here's the link to listen to it:

It is well worth your time. Download it to your iPod and listen to it during the next car ride you have, or maybe when you just when you have a random half an hour free in your house. You won't regret it.

A Hike through God's Creation

A group from my Sunday School class at Agnew decided to hike to Rainbow Falls on a gorgeous Saturday. It was a long hike, but it was worth it to spend time with friends, get sore muscles, and see the waterfalls... :) Here's just a glimpse into our day!

We made it to the top!!!

In Debt...

Yes, that's what I said. I'm in debt. And so are you. And the debt is too great to be paid back. That's kinda scary, isn't it?  Have you ever owed something to someone? Maybe not even money, but you had something huge hanging over your head, and someone showed you a great kindness at work, or at school, at home, maybe a friend helped you out of a very bad predicament. Maybe someone donated an organ so that your life could be saved. Have you been able to think of a situation like this from your life? It's overwhelming. You are indebted to that person, because they gave so much for you, and you probably didn't even deserve it.

I had a fresh reminder this week of my indebtedness. It begins with a meek, single man who had a group of close friends that he always spent time with. He cared about these friends a lot. And one night, right before a holiday in his country, he was having a special dinner with these friends to celebrate. Before the dinner, one of his close friends had met with this man's enemies and promised to do one of the ugliest deeds that ever could be part of a friendship. He was going to turn over his friend to these enemies. And his friend knew about this meeting. So when they were at dinner, everyone was enjoying the time together, and this meek man kindly shared his food with his friend, even though he knew that friend was going to meet up with his enemies that night to bring them to one of this man's favorite hiding spots to capture him - which they did.

But it's not over yet, because after capturing this man, all of his friends escaped and left him alone to endure whatever suffering these enemies had in mind. And they made him suffer a lot. They spit on him, hit him, pulled his hair, smacked him, and whipped him. After a lot more, they finally killed him. And he let them kill him instead of me.

So if this man died, why do I owe him anything? A dead person can't collect debts. Well that's just it. He's not dead. He's actually alive right now. And you think I'm crazy right now, but I promise you that I'm not. This man's name is Jesus, and He beat death. He stayed dead for three days, and then he came alive again. Because this man is also God. And He went through all of those beatings/betrayals for me. He did this for ME. He held His peace for my sake. He died for me. And because He lives again, I can be forgiven of the debt I owe to God for all of my sins. What's more, He did this for YOU TOO!  I've accepted His offer of forgiveness - all He required is for me to believe that He died and rose again for me to be freed from my sins. But have YOU accepted His offer to you? He's holding out His hands to you, and all you need to do is receive it. If you haven't, will you do it today?

We had a semi-traumatic event Saturday night in my dorm room... The death and funeral of our poor betta fish named Marius. Well ok, not all of us were that upset because frankly we decided it was just plain work to take care of a pet that really didn't entertain us all that much. But it was kinda sad since he only lasted two months and 4 days.

Gold Rush!!!

Our awesome president was in the Green parade!
We had perfect weather for the day... And everyone can tell it today, because half the student body is walking around fried to a crisp. I am thankful for Aloe gel and the fact that only my arms and face got the brunt of the sunburn.
With my roomie from my sophomore year... She came to visit and came to GRD. :)

A change in American Christianity

I want to tell you a story of some believers on the other side of the world. This is another one of the many stories I got from block class (most things recently seem to be coming from there). My teacher tells of a group of believers who met together to pray, and when they were done and had no time left, they came to the conclusion that the had too much to pray for in the short time they had set aside. And so they came up with the idea of once a month, spending all of Friday night in prayer.

My teacher asked, "All night? And what time did they finish?" He was thinking that all night meant maybe till 12 - 2 A.M. or something.

The man responded, "9 the next morning."

My teacher had another question. "What happened then?"

The man: "When we finished at 9, we realized that we still had too much to pray for... so we decided to meet EVERY week and spend the whole night in prayer." And he went on to say that they had been doing this ever since.

This is one of those true stories that is so convicting. These people literally spend HOURS each week in prayer. And I spend how much??? How about the average American Christian? I wonder what would happen if I spent more time in prayer? If my whole campus spent more time in prayer? If my church and your church spent more time in prayer? If every American Christian would spend more time in prayer?

It seems that yet again there exists another aspect of the Christian life that some believers around the world have gotten right, and that we here in America have lost or never figured out. Maybe this is where it starts if we want a change in American Christianity?

Cross-Cultural Kismet

Hello, Humans (or should I say Hello again, fellow bipedal earthborn creature)!

Okay, so I'd never actually heard of the word 'kismet' before, but the online thesaurus says it means fate. But it's always good to learn new things, so you and I have just learned its meaning. And my fate for this semester is to be studying linguistics, ethics, and - you got it - cross-cultural classes (aka missions block class). That might also be a slight reason for the seemingly random introduction to this blog post. No, I haven't totally lost my marbles by becoming a second-semester senior about to graduate from college. I'm getting this from my teacher, actually. Our first day of class he welcomed us humans, and before today's daily quiz he addressed us as bipedal earthborn creatures. But what can you say. We are a small class of good friends that are excited about everything cross-cultural.

And let me tell you already, this is going to be one good semester. I love my classes. And the last two days in Practices of Cross-Cultural Ministry, our teacher has brought cross-cultural snacks for us to enjoy in between lectures (what else do you do with a small class and a 2 hour daily class). Yesterday we got Brilliant brand cakes from somewhere in Asia. And today we got Jelly sticks from China. They didn't taste too bad, but I had a hard time getting past the texture. My teacher introduced them to us as "flavored snot tubes" because that's the closest thing he could think of that described the texture. Think grape jelly put a bit more thick. Yeah. And my teacher is an interesting personality if you haven't guessed already.

Aside from the weird foods, I've actually been learning a lot of practical information that will be very helpful for me as I prepare to live in another culture for most if not the rest of my life.
